Volunteers planted 14,000 seedlings in March. A survey in September found 82 percent alive and growing.

The survey counted 2,310 plots across four stretches of coast. Survival was highest (91 percent) where volunteers planted at low tide and used bamboo stakes, and lowest (68 percent) on exposed mud flats.

The trust plans to plant 20,000 more next March and to involve fishing families as paid caretakers.
